Professional Bicycle Mechanic Certification
The Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association in cooperation with the cycling industry's leading education providers created an education committee focused on developing standards of excellence within the cycling community that is focused on education, training and certification.
Certification is founded upon the following building blocks:

New Technology & Hands-on Training
The PBMA in conjunction with manufacturing and education partners provides training and education opportunities to ensure:
  • Mechanics are up-to-date with the latest technology
  • Mechanics are educated in mechanical and product cycling responsibilities
  • Mechanics have professional development opportunities
Safety & Environment
The PBMA is focusing on key aspects of mechanical learning, professional development and product knowledge to improve the safety and enjoyment of cycling for the consumer.

The PBMA is providing technical staff the knowledge they need to provide a positive consumer experience while also continuing to enhance the development of the cycling business.
Professional Development & Continuing Education
The PBMA offers, evaluates, and endorses education and training opportunities.

A PBMA Certified mechanic must meet bi-annual continuing education requirements.

The PBMA produces Professional Development content and Regional Technical Workshops.
What is Certification?
Certification is a technical proof of skill for bicycle mechanics.  Bicycles are not toys and as such when improperly assembled or maintained can pose a serious safety risk to the rider.  The PBMA Education Committee is focused on education and training so that bicycles are safe.  Every Certified mechanic has a continuing education requirement so they are always up to date on the latest trends, technology and protocols which means that the service they are providing is as efficient and cost effective as possible.

How does Certification affect me?
When choosing a service facility (shop, mobile or individual) you'll be able to view and verify what certification they have as well as which manufacturers endorsements they possess.  A shop advertising or displaying an official PBMA Certified logo must have 50% or more of their service staff certified in addition to meeting a number of other business conditions.
Why Certification matters:
Bicycle owners have the right to know their bicycle has been built, serviced and cared for by a Professionally Certified Bicycle Mechanic.  Having Certified technicians on staff benefits the business owner just as much as the consumer.  Certified mechanics not only have the most current technical skills from the manufacturer, they are also receiving and have access to professional development and business education opportunities.
