Mechanic Certification 1 or 2-year certificate
Mechanic Certification is recognized industry wide as proof of the basic skills necessary to work on and assemble bicycles. There are multiple pathways to certification:
Mechanic Certification is recognized industry wide as proof of the basic skills necessary to work on and assemble bicycles. There are multiple pathways to certification:
- During the initial launch of certification (September 2017 through June 2018) the Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association will certify Mechanic Members of their association.
- In the process of certification creation a vetting process will be created and applied to Mechanic Members who are members in good standing prior to October 31st 2017. This initial vetted certification will be valid for a period of one year and may be extended by meeting continuing education requirements (CEU's).
- If you are already a practicing bicycle mechanic you are required to pass a short online test covering basic proof of knowledge, upon successful completion you are then able to schedule a practical exam with a certified trainer
- If you're new to the industry you can attend class at one of the recognized educational providers (list here) where you will receive training; upon successful completion of the course be certified
- You may also choose to learn the skills from a mentor or while working in a shop environment, when ready an online assessment is available, upon successful completion you're able to schedule a practical exam with a certified trainer
Trainer Certification
The Trainer Certification is for individuals or organizations that want to certify bicycle mechanics. A mixture of online learning and in person session creating educators and education pathways. |
Levels of Mechanic Certification
There are presently three levels of certification for Mechanics: Mechanic I / Assembler Mechanic II Master Mechanic |
Continuing Education Program (CEU)
To remain certified an individual must fulfill a continuing education requirement via online or in person manufacturer training. Details can be found here |
Certification Endorsements and Specific Training
Once certified you're able to attend advanced training opportunities such as PBMA Regional Training Summits and manufacturer training (list here). BTC Certification is a prerequisite to many manufacturers training programs. |
